Emergency Planning Tips

1)      Food and Water

Have at least 3 days food and water in storage for each person in your family + anyone who you think might end up under your care (In-laws, Girl/ boyfriends, friends, ect).  Each person will need/ want, depending on temperature and activity, 16oz of water and 1200 calories of food per day. You can get away with less but, if you need to move on foot you will need  extra food, and water. Also, have in your kit the means to make more food and water. For short term you will need cooking supplies and pots to boil water. In the long term “(And Yes you should plan for long term survival)” you will need hunting and fishing gear along with salt for preserving meats and foods. Also, get a survival garden Seed Vault. Again, plan long term, you never know what will happen. Think of it as a cheap insurance policy.

2)      Protect your Family

“If you can’t protect your family and survival supplies you won’t have any”

This is hard for most people to think about but you need to face the fact that in a life-or-death situation it’s every man for him/ herself (women or family). We would like to think that, in hard times, we would all come together and help each other out - and maybe we would. But, when I was in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, I can tell you first hand that people were not helping each other out - in fact quite the opposite. My point is don’t be the only guy on the block with a boat during a flood, and if you are, get a gun you will need it! See our Tactical & Self- Defense gear with this in mind. http://www.tacticalguardian.com/TACTICAL-GEAR_c_8.html

3)      Get Ready to Evacuate

1-      Have 5 gallons of gas with your emergency kit.

2-      If you don’t have a car get a bike public transportation isn’t reliable in an emergency.

3-      Be mobile, have your kit in a back pack and spread the load.

4-      Have some form of communication Radio, cell phone w/charger, signaling equipment.

5-       Pack extra clothes (warm and cold weather) in a dry bag.

6-      Keep cash in your kit. ATMs are not going to work in a power outage. Also pack change for phone booths.

7-      Pack for at least 3 days worth of food, water and clothes. See our Tactical Guardian Emergency Kit Checklist

4)      Pick 4 Family Meeting Spots

Have 4 locations away from your home that your family can meet at after an emergency.

1-      Pick spots that are familiar to everyone in the family and that are easy to get to.

2-      Identify potential threats in your area i.e. fault lines, flood plains, volcanoes, tsunami zones, possible terrorist targets and ect.

3-      Pick spots that are close, far away, in town and out of town.

4-      Don’t pick spots that are all in the same terrain i.e. in the valley or in city limits or by a mountain and so on.

5-      Pick spots that will not be congested in route and on location.

6-      Have a plan for what spot to meet at i.e. after a flood, meet here, after an earthquake, meet here…. Keep in mind that others might have the same idea so picking a spot that is less traveled would be best.

7-      Write this plan down and print off a copy for everyone in your family. Include maps with directions and phone numbers (most people keep numbers in their cell phones and don’t know them by heart).
